Lets talk about electric shocks

Electric Shocks and tingles - What to do!

Have you ever got an electric shock off a cable or an appliance and brushed it off as nothing?

Electric shocks occur when you come into contact with an electric current, which flows through the body.  Effects from an electric shock can range from tingling and mild discomfort through to burns, severe internal and external injuries (including heart damage), unconsciousness and can even be fatal.

Warning signs that something is wrong with your appliances or electrical wiring in your house can be:

unexplained diming or brightening of your lights

unusual performance of electrical appliances

electric shock from water pipes, taps, gas fittings, or any exposed metallic surface

If you experience an electric shock or tingle from any of the above or you have damage to your property from an electrical incident you should:

Stop using the appliance or stay away from what gave you the electric shock

Report it to your local electrical network provider

Seek medical advice.

Regardless of how minor the electric shock is, you should seek medical attention as an electric shock can affect your body sometime after it occurred.

Avoid touching any metallic appliances, water taps, gas fittings or metallic surfaces until the network operator can determine the cause of the fault.
