Why should you choose induction?

Want to make the switch from gas to induction? Let us explain why you should.

For many years gas has been the method of choice in many homes across Australia, however people are starting to make the switch to induction stove tops. With their sleek design, efficiency and health benefits its not hard to see why.

Thinking of making the switch but don't know what to look for or where to start? Let us explain

Induction cook tops use electromagnetic energy instead of a gas flame or radiating heat from electric coils. It has excellent temperature control, increased safety as the cooktop doesn't get as hot, they are easier to clean due to the flat surface and most importantly they are more energy efficient.

Before you make the switch there are a few considerations to consider.

What type of cooktop do you want to get - Freestanding oven or built in to a countertop

Choosing the right size - The two most common cooktop widths are 60cm and 90cm. Your choice may be restricted due to the space you have available. The optimal size for you will depend on how many pots you want to have on the go at once.

Cost - Making the switch to an induction cook top can add up. Cook tops can range from$500 to $6000. You may also need to upgrade your cookware. Glass, aluminium and copper cookware are not compatible however stainless steel, enamelled and cast iron cookware might be. A good way to check if your pots and pans are compatible is by placing a fridge magnet on the bottom. If the magnet sticks to the outside then you should be good to go.

Controls - Now you wouldn't think this would be a big deal but controls play a big part in user satisfaction. A good thing to look out for is the size of the controls. Are they big enough for your fingers to operate. As they are touch sensitive some users have stated that they can't use their cooktops due to the controls being too small for their fingers.

Framed or not - Some cooktops are frameless whereas others have a frame around the edge of the glass surface. Framing can be good for containing spills but can also be harder to clean as the food can get stuck under the edging. Frameless cook top scan also be more vulnerable to cracking if something is dropped on the edge.

Rangehood or downdraught - Even though there wont be combustion products being produced from burning gas, you will still need an extraction fan to avoid condensation in your kitchen. The allowable height for a range hood above an induction cooktop can vary from what is required with a gas cooktop so remember to check before you make your choice.

You should also have the following checked by a licensed electrician before making any of the above decisions.

Is your wiring or switchboard compatible. You may need to upgrade your switchboard or the wiring to your kitchen. Induction cooktops have varying power requirements but most are likely to require a circuit on the 30 to 40 amp range.

Some home have a lower power connection to the grid. A large induction cooker can require a 40 amp connection, causing the main grid breaker to trip. You will need to check what's required at your home with and electrician and can cost upwards of$2000.
