What are those green domes for?

Have you seen a green dome or pillar near your house, at the park or on the side of the road and always thought, I wonder what this is for?  Well those little green domes are actually sunken power poles that connect your house to the electricity network in your area.

They contain the electrical wires that run from the power line poles to the tops of houses, expect they are underground and the green dome is a protective housing for this wiring. Did you also know that they are the colour green so they will blend in with the environment and natural surrounds.

If you have a green dome or pillar on your property, follow these steps to keep safe:

  1. Keep the area clear - The area above and around the pillar should be kept clear at all times to allow for authorised access. This must also include a 500mm exclusion zone around the base of the unit.
  2. Allow easy access - Horizon Power need access to pillars at all times. Keep shrubbery and obstructions well away and always ensure that the pillar or dome is always above ground level.
  3. Report any damage - If you make contact or notice any damage to the pillar, immediately report to Horizon Power faults line by calling the 13 23 51.  Stay well away and ensure no one goes near the pillar until Horizon Power arrives.

You should always know where the underground cables are on your property. In areas where power is underground it is important to always remember that they can be extremely dangerous is struck or damaged.  Even though the power is out of sight it should never be out of mind. When planning any work within your property it is important to proceed with caution where electrical wiring may be. Not only is it costly is these cables are damaged they can also cause significant damage, injury and possibly death.
